Ubisoft has recently been undergoing significant internal changes that are affecting some of its key franchises, including Prince of Persia and Rayman. Following the mixed reception of Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, the development team behind the game has been disbanded as part of Ubisoft’s broader restructuring efforts. This restructuring seems to reflect Ubisoft’s shift in focus, with key resources being redirected toward other projects.

One of the major changes involves Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Remake, a highly anticipated game that has faced numerous delays and development challenges. Initially being developed by Ubisoft’s Pune and Mumbai studios, the project has now been handed over to Ubisoft Montreal, the original creators of the 2003 classic. This shift happened after the remake faced multiple setbacks, including postponements from its original 2021 release date to a tentative 2026 launch.

The remake has also been plagued by issues related to the development team itself. Ubisoft Toronto, which was recently brought on to assist with the project, has faced layoffs, further complicating the game’s development trajectory Despite these challenges, Ubisoft continues to reassure fans that the remake is still in the works and aims to stay true to the beloved original, albeit with necessary updates to modernize the experience.

Interestingly, these shifts in development resources are not exclusive to Prince of Persia. Ubisoft is also doubling down on remakes and revivals of its other iconic franchises, with rumors suggesting that Rayman could be receiving more attention soon. Some of the disbanded Prince of Persia team members are reportedly being reassigned to work on new iterations of other Ubisoft classics, which may include Rayman. This would align with Ubisoft’s strategy of leveraging its back catalog to create fresh experiences for both new players and long-time fans.

These moves are part of Ubisoft’s broader attempts to navigate a challenging period for the company. The gaming giant has experienced layoffs across its global studios, a trend that mirrors a wider industry-wide adjustment as companies grapple with economic uncertainties and evolving market demands. Despite this, Ubisoft is making calculated efforts to refocus its resources on high-potential projects, hoping that a return to its classic franchises could help rejuvenate its portfolio.
