“Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2,” which launched via early access on September 5, has faced a review-bombing campaign on Steam, with over 1,000 negative reviews criticizing the “stealth” installation of Epic Online Services (EOS). Despite this backlash, the game has seen a recovery in its Steam ratings, improving from “Mixed” to “Mostly Positive.”
The controversy stems from EOS being automatically installed to facilitate crossplay without players being informed. Some users also expressed concerns over the comprehensive End User License Agreement (EULA) regarding data collection. However, the EOS software is crucial for cross-platform multiplayer and can be uninstalled if desired.
While the initial reaction was negative, most reviews now focus on minor bugs rather than privacy issues. Many fans defended the game on platforms like Reddit, noting that EOS is commonly used in modern multiplayer games. Critics argue that players often overlook similar EULAs in other games, with Epic Games becoming an easy target for backlash.
Despite the negative reviews, critics have praised “Space Marine 2” for its gameplay and design, giving it a strong OpenCritic rating of 83%. Fans of the Warhammer universe and third-person shooters may still find the game enjoyable, as its crossplay capabilities enhance the multiplayer experience.
