Warner Bros. Discovery has set its sights on a sequel to the hit 2023 game Hogwarts Legacy, making it one of their top priorities for the coming years. During the 2024 Media, Communications & Entertainment Conference, WBD’s Chief Financial Officer, Gunnar Wiedenfels, confirmed that the team is actively looking toward a successor to the widely popular Wizarding World title. The decision comes after Hogwarts Legacy crossed 22 million copies sold by the end of 2023, marking a massive success for the company and showing the game’s staying power within the fan base.

Hogwarts Legacy, released in February 2023, allowed players to immerse themselves in the wizarding world long before the events of the Harry Potter series, following a fresh cast of characters at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The game received praise for its expansive world-building, intricate storyline, and compelling gameplay, which led to players collectively spending 707 million hours in the game by the end of 2023. This level of engagement has clearly demonstrated the game’s impact, encouraging Warner Bros. Games to build on that momentum with a sequel.

While the company is riding high on the success of Hogwarts Legacy, their gaming division has faced other challenges in 2024. The recent release of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League failed to meet expectations, adding pressure on the gaming unit to deliver another blockbuster hit. Wiedenfels acknowledged this, emphasizing that gaming remains a “strategic asset” for Warner Bros. Discovery despite recent setbacks.

In the meantime, fans were treated to Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions, a separate game focusing solely on the sport of Quidditch, which had been notably absent from Hogwarts Legacy. Though this new release features beloved characters like Harry Potter and Hermione Granger, it does not directly tie into the storyline of Hogwarts Legacy, but it serves as a complementary addition to the expanding roster of Wizarding World games

Given the critical and commercial success of Hogwarts Legacy, it’s no surprise that Warner Bros. Discovery sees its sequel as a key piece of their gaming strategy moving forward. Fans will have to wait a few years, but the groundwork has been laid for another magical adventure.
